Entry from: Olympia, Greece Entry Title: "Ancient Olympia" Entry: "From Areopoli and the Mani Peninsula we headed by car to Olympia and Andritsena, Greece Olympia was the location of the ancient Olympic games which were held very 4 years from 776BC to 393AD- that's over 1000 years. Consider that when realizing that our modern Olympics have only been taking place for 115 years! Athletes and spectators from all around the Mediterranean came to the games, and all nations in the area declared a two month truce to any wars and fighting so that travelers could make their way safely to the competitions. The agreement to universal truces was only broken 3 times during the 1000+ years that the ancient games were held. Seeing the ruins of the ancient Olympic complex was amazing. There were the remains of the two enormous temples- one for Zeus and one for Hera as well as the ancient stone tunnel the athletes used for entry into the Olympic stadium. The temple of Hera is where today's modern Olympic torch is lit to start its round the world trip leading up to each of the modern Olympic Games. The promenade leading to the athletes' entrance to the stadium is lined with the remains of old stone statues depicting the image and name every competitor ever caught cheating in the ancient games.
